Department of Materials Physics is the centre of experimental physics research at the Eötvös Loránd University, it has a key role in the education and graduation of experimental physics researchers and physics teachers in Hungary. Scientific fields of material physics, solid state physics and teaching of physics are in the focus of the department.

Beside theoretical research on materials (dislocation dynamics, X-ray line profile analysis and quantum informatics), researchers of the department manage scientific projects on diverse fields (such as hydrogen storage, severe plastic deformation, ultra fine and nano grained materials, high entropy alloys and micromechanics). The department also hosts a modern experimental research facility for X-ray diffraction structure and defect analysis, scanning and transmission electronmicroscopy, thermal analysis and scanning probe methods.
