Breakthrough in laser fusion 2021: More than 70% of laser energy conversion to fusion energy

Abstract: One of the greatest challenge of mankind is to provide energy without increasing global warming and without producing long lifetime nuclear waste. Nuclear fusion is therefore attractive. Besides magnetic confinement of the high temperature fuel material an alternative method is inertial fusion, especially that driven by lasers. One of the greatest breakthrough of the last year was the obtained 70% fusion conversion in the fuel, which after 60 years of experiments and after the flops of the last decade drew again the attention to this method and gives new hope.   We follow the presentation of Annie Kritcher at the IFSA2021 conference, which demonstrated how the 1.3 MJ fusion energy was reached from the 1.9 MJ laser energy on 8th August 2021.
