UNSOLVED PROBLEMS in Astrophysics and Cosmology 2022 — Venue

 Venue

The venue is at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. There are two campuses in Jerusalem, so we emphasize here that the meeting is happening at the Edmond J. Safra campus, located in the Givat Ram neighborhood of Jerusalem. (We caution participants not to go to the Mt. Scopus campus; while it is quite beautiful, it is also an hour away by public transport.)

The address is:

Racah Institute of Physics
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Edmond J. Safra Campus
Jerusalem 9190401 Israel

The website for the department is:

Google street map of the Hebrew University's Edmond J. Safra Campus:

Below is another map of the Campus. Four key conference locations are marked on the map:

  • In the green circle, there is the main foot entrance to Edmond J. Safra Campus, located on the north end of campus.
  • In the yellow circle, there is the Rothberg School of Engineering. Monday/Tuesday lectures will be held here, in Auditorium A300. This building also has a cafe where you can purchase snacks/meals/coffee.
  • In the turquoise circle, there is the Brain Sciences Building. Wednesday/Thursday lectures will be held here, in the "ELSC" Auditorium.
  • The blue circle marks the Ross building, where the HUJI astro group works. A seminar room and a lounge will be available here for World Cup viewings each night the games are on.

 Jerusalem Light Rail system

Here is a map of the Jerusalem Light Rail system, which is the most efficient way of getting around the city. Key stops:

  • He-Haluts and Kiryat Moshe are the closest to campus; each is about a 20 minute walk to the conference site.
  • Central Station is where one can pick up trains to Ben Gurion airport, Tel Aviv, or further destinations.
  • Mahane Yehuda is the central "shouk" for unique food and nightlife.
  • Jaffa Center is another good stop for restaurants and entertainment.
  • City Hall is the closest stop to the Old City of Jerusalem.

Getting to Jerusalem from the Tel Aviv airport

Train, generally the easiest and cheapest option: from the airport, the train goes to the central train station in Jerusalem ("Yitzhak Navon station") in about 25 minutes. From there, most hotels are accessible via the Jerusalem light rail (see above) or an in-city taxi. The train is cheap and fast but not necessarily direct (if you have a long light rail/taxi ride at the end). It runs every 30 minutes, normally. See: https://www.rail.co.il/en

Please note: the trains (like all public transit) do not run from Friday night to Saturday night. During this time period and for early morning Sunday flights the best strategy is to arrange a taxi in advance. Christina Khoury (see our Contact information page) can do that for you as the date approaches.

Taxi: direct but expensive, usually 80-100 USD.

Shared taxi ("nesher"): semi-direct and cheap, but expect 20-45 minutes of extra stops. This is also a little challenging because unlike in a normal taxi, there is much less chance the driver speaks English. You are recommended to negotiate a fare in advance; from Jerusalem to the airport it should be 20-30 USD.

 COVID19

Israel currently has no covid entry/exit restrictions, either at the border or internally in universities. For your planning information, masking rates have fallen quite low. Covid cases have also fallen to a quite low level, although at least part of that is likely an artifact of reduced testing rates.
