Abstract: The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project was launched in 2005 with the elaboration of the ELI Science Case. The detailed planning process, led by the future Nobel Laureate Gerard Mourou, was conducted under the ELI Preparatory Phase (ELI-PP) EU Framework Programme (EU FP) project, which ran from 2007 to 2010. The main deliverable of the ELI-PP was to produce the so-called ELI White Paper, which, in addition to setting out the scientific objectives, described in detail the sites and equipment to be implemented. In our presentation we briefly outline the main considerations underlying the White Paper and compare them with the infrastructure that has actually been implemented. We will illustrate the research potential offered by the pool of equipment in Szeged with the results achieved in the field of attosecond and few-cycle pulse generation. At the end of the presentation, we will briefly present our recent progress in the development of a laser neutron source for the transmutation of nuclear waste.
