Super-Resolution Light Microscopy – Can We Overcome the Diffraction Limit?

Abstract:

Resolution is among the main limitations of light microscopy. Over the past few decades, quite some efforts were made in order to overcome this limitation. Those improvements were awarded at the end with the Nobel-prize in chemistry in 2014. In my lecture I will introduce the most popular/wide-spread methods for achieving super-resolution, present the underlying physical concepts and discuss their advantages/disadvantages. I will also give an overview about the conceptual limitations and future development directions.
