Electromagnetic effects in strongly interacting matter

Az előadás kivonata: Intense electromagnetic fields are known to be present in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, in the interior of magnetars and during the evolution of the early Universe. Besides having a significant impact for the phenomenology of the above systems, the electromagnetic response of QCD matter is also relevant for the coupling of photons to the axion, a potential dark matter candidate sought for intensively in contemporary and future observatories. This non-perturbative, equilibrium system can be investigated directly by means of first-principles lattice QCD simulations on high-performance supercomputers. In this talk I will give an overview of the lattice results concerning background magnetic fields, and also discuss first results for the impact of electric fields and the axion-photon coupling.
