Cognition, collective action and cultural evolution

Az előadás kivonata: My research program examines how individual cognitive capacities scale up to shape collective patterns in animal societies. I use primate and avian models to characterise individual behaviour in the spatial (large-scale visually-guided navigation), physical (tool use; object manipulation) and conceptual (numerical and symbolic competence) domains. This forms the basis for exploring how these capacities interact in a social context to give rise to group-level processes, such as collective coordination, conflict resolution and culture. Further, I propose a unifying framework that countenances group decision-making as an iterative learning process, and thus emphasises the role of collective intelligence in the emergence of cultural phenomena hitherto considered uniquely human, but arguably found even in non-humans. As such, I suggest that that the study of simpler processes in animal cognition also has the potential to reveal much about apparently complex social phenomena.
